The September Football Group Break – The Platinum Saga

Around the middle of August things were going awesome.  I had low prices locked in on Topps Football Jumbo.  I had everything ordered and ready to go.  Then things changed.

I realized, found out, that Sweet Spot was not coming out until September 15.  My Jumbo cases arrived and bam, the quality control was junk and I was stuck with 40 lbs of worthless cards.  I decided to just drop the jumbo box from the monthly break and then was talked into busting a box of Topps Platinum.

Like a responsible group breaker I immediately purchased the box of Topps Platinum in this auction.  I then start the wait for a tracking number.  It doesn’t show up.  Before I found that auction I had put in an offer on this auction and early the next morning the offer was accepted.  I emailed the seller from the first auction with no response and then notice that negative feedback is piling up.  So I filed a paypal claim.

I have received a tracking number on the second auction and hopefully those boxes will be here tomorrow or the next day.  USPS doesn’t give an estimated delivery date.  Essentially most everything that can go wrong for a group break has gone wrong, but in a short time the platinum will arrive, the box will be busted and the cards will be mailed.

Topps Jumbo Case Damaged Card Saga Continues

Some of you will recall that a couple weeks ago I was told by Topps to package up my UPC’s and receipts and send them to Duryea.  Well I did that.  I then received a letter with replacement T-206 mini cards that told me that a supervisor would be in contact me.

Well a week past and nothing so I contacted Topps by Twitter and then by email.  It was like a brand new day in that no one knew what I seemd to be talking about.  Well Mike from the home office gave me a call today and told me that I need mail all the cards back to Topps.  This is a change from what I was originally told.  If you have ever seen 3 cases be busted you can imagine what this entailed.  Let me break it down for you: 50 cards per pack, 10 packs per box, 6 boxes per case, 3 cases = 50*10*6*3 = 9000 cards.

That is four deep and 3 wide.  All the blacks, golds, autos, jerseys, gridiron giveaway, rookie reprints and on and on.  It weighed just over 40 lbs and cost $45 to send.  Mike said that he isnt sure if he is going to be able to replace the 3 cases and I told him that I have $1500 in these cases.  I checked the cards again just to make sure I wasn’t smokin crack and yes, the corners are awful.

Bottom line is I get sent a box of jumbo I am going to be pissed off.  I have concluded, partially because I have now sunk an extra $45 to mail this that they owe me.  Thoughts?

More Snap Case Shenanigans

Why do people continue to ship cards in snap cases so they can bang around in there for 3,000 miles?  Would you ship this card that way? And yes all four corners were worse for the wear.

For the record I now have 4 of these after searching for 1 to complete my set for months.

Triple Threadiness

Earlier today I got an Email from King Felix:

Hey Joe Collector,

What do you think of the new 2010 Topps Triple Threads Baseball? $160
a box or more for 2 packs of cards. I know you weren’t a fan in the
past, but are you more impressed with the new stuff? They have some on
card autos now, and the new stickers are way better, don’t ya think? I
like how there are more Felix’s this year, and the All Star patches
are way cool. What say you?

Here was my Response:

I still wouldn’t buy boxes per say. It is still a singles product and their are some nice singles out there. The only way I would say to buy boxes is if you came across a sealed case and then bought 5-8 boxes to see if you could nail the case hit.

I don’t hate the product as much as Gellman does, I just think the boxes are a rip off.

J

This product on the wax level makes me sick to my stomach. Check out breaks here, here, and here and over here at Wax Pack Relapse.

Here is the problem, sure if you yank some of these cards you did pretty well but look at some of these auctions from 2009 Triple threads. Here, here, here here and maybe here

Why is that a problem?  Remember these are $162 a box and make no mistake, this is a hit product.  Serial numbered base cards are not worth anything of note.  In other words you can lose $120 a box on this stuff.  The singles are damn nice, especially for team and player collectors.
